Back in April, I blogged about TerraCylce and Old Navy teaming up to collect used flip flops to recycle into public playgrounds. Well, the campaign was a huge success and they collected almost twenty thousand flip flops for these playgrounds.
The playgrounds are made by PDPlay, which manufactures environmentally-friendly playground equipment from the highest amount of post-consumer recycled content available in the commercial market. PDPlay’s use of post-consumer recycled plastic lumber keeps millions of recyclables out of landfills each year.
The playgrounds are being constructed in Austin, Texas, San Jose, California, and Poughkeepsie, New York with a fourth location yet to be determined.
In addition to its partnership with Old Navy, TerraCycle has free collection programs called Brigades that divert packaging waste from landfills and help raise consumer awareness about reducing, reusing and recycling.
